چکیده

Imagers on many of the current and future operational meteorological satellites in geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) and lower Earth orbit (LEO) have enough spectral channels to derive cloud microphysical properties useful for a variety of applications. The products include cloud amount, phase, optical depth, temperature, height and pressure, thickness, effective particle size, and ice or liquid water path, shortwave albedo, and outgoing longwave radiation for each imager pixel. Because aircraft icing depends on cloud temperature, droplet size, and liquid water content as well as aircraft variables, it is possible to estimate the potential icing conditions from the cloud phase, temperature, effective droplet size, and liquid water path. A prototype icing index is currently being derived over the contiguous USA in near-real time from Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-10 and 12) data on a half-hourly basis and from NOAA16 Advanced Very High Resolution (AVHRR) data when available. Because the threshold-based algorithm is sensitive to small errors and differences in satellite imager and icing is complex process, a new probability based icing diagnosis technique is developed from a limited set of pilot reports. The algorithm produces reasonable patterns of icing probability and intensities when compared with independent model and pilot report data. Methods are discussed for improving the technique for incorporation into operational icing products. keywords: aircraft icing, clouds, remote sensing, cloud microphysics, GOES, MODIS, AVHRR, air safety

8.11 toward a Three-dimensional Near-real Time Cloud Product for Aviation Safety and Weather Diagnoses

Satellite data have long been used for determining the extent of cloud cover and for estimating the properties at the cloud tops. The derived properties can also be used to estimate aircraft icing potential to improve the safety of air traffic in the region. Currently, cloud properties and icing potential are derived in nearreal time over the United States of America (USA) from the Geostationar...

Study the effect of nano Al2O3 and nano graphene ceramic additives on the aircraft anti-icing/de-icing fluids

In the present study, the effect of nano Al2O3 and nano graphene ceramic additives in optimizing performance and improving thermophysical properties of aircraft anti-icing/de-icing fluids was investigated. Nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, SEM and XRD methods. The thermal conductivity, surface tension and dynamic viscosity of the hybrid nanofluids were experimentally assessed for tempera...

بررسی شرایط هواشناختی یخ‌زدگی هواپیما در دو بررسی موردی (فرودگاه مهرآباد-تهران)

Ice can form on aircraft surface at 0° C or colder temperatures when liquid water is present. This can happen both on the ground and at the flight levels of the aircraft. Aircraft icing has not only an impact on flight safety but has also an economic impact. According to the report of research department of the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), from 1982 to 2001, 13% of accidents due to ai...

Weather Features Associated with Aircraft Icing Conditions: A Case Study

In the context of aviation weather hazards, the study of aircraft icing is very important because of several accidents attributed to it over recent decades. On February 1, 2012, an unusual meteorological situation caused severe icing of a C-212-200, an aircraft used during winter 2011-2012 to study winter cloud systems in the Guadarrama Mountains of the central Iberian Peninsula. Observations i...

TIME OPTIMAL SLEW MANEUVER OF MAGNETICALLY ACTUATED LEO SATELLITES

Conventional magnetic attitude control methodologies require several orbital periods to accomplish the required attitude maneuvers due to the existence of an uncontrollable axis, namely the local Earth’s magnetic field vector. Since in some attitude maneuver missions the elapsed time is of critical importance, those time-consuming controllers are not satisfactory and we need a much faster contr...
